The period 2021-2022 was challenging with dimmed prospects of a post-pandemic recovery and European donors struggled to maintain their financial support to sexual and reproductive freedom across the globe.
Data collected indicates donors contributed 2.780 billion Euros to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). 12 out of the 13 European donors under review either increased or maintained funding compared to the previous year. But data also shows that the portion of this funding going to sexual and reproductive health and family planning decreased for the first time in 4 years to 1.385 billion Euros. This is an 8% decrease compared to the previous year.
European donors continue to be vocal about the importance of SRHR in international cooperation. 18 new European policy documents that include commitments to SRHR were endorsed during 2021-2022.
But more has to be done. It is now when standing by our values matters most. We must treat all people with dignity and humanity, not despite, but because we are faced with multiple crises caused by war, inflation, and a hard post-pandemic recovery. Some signs point to ODA being cut in the next few years which will be a missed opportunity to invest in healthy, safe and equal societies.
Looking ahead, we urge European donors to increase investments in SRHR and family planning; and develop bolder policies to support people’s reproductive freedom and safety worldwide. We stress the importance of fulfilling SRHR needs if we are to achieve gender equality across the globe.
