Swiss civil society sets higher standards for the implementation of Agenda 2030

The Swiss Civil Society Platform Agenda 2030 has published the report “How sustainable is Switzerland – Implementing the 2030 Agenda from a civil society perspective” which sets higher standards than the weak governmental plan on the implementation of Agenda 2030. The civil society report provides information, action points as well as specific and overall recommendations on a broad set of topics. SEXUAL HEALTH Switzerland is member of the Platform Agenda 2030 and has contributed to the chapter on Health, focusing on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and family planning.

The report came in strong contrast to the disappointing governmental official report and based on the belief that Switzerland should quickly change course if it hopes to live up to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The official report is a cause for concern as it only consists of 24 pages with very weak messages ignoring the insights of a baseline study including a broad consultation among civil society organisations. The governmental report seems to disregard many of the interdependencies and linkages between SDGs. SEXUAL HEALTH Switzerland issued a press release focusing on SDG 3 regarding health. As we know, a number of SDG 3 targets concern sexual and reproductive health, including the fight against HIV/AIDS, maternal mortality and family planning.

Civil society organisations do not accept Switzerland stepping back from its pledges to the 2030 Agenda during the very important implementation phase. They present an adjusted baseline and demand that both the inputs from the previous consultation as well as their recommendations found in this latest report are taken into account by the government. The civil society report will be presented to different stakeholders including civil servants and members of Parliament.

The Platform Agenda 2030 was built in 2017 and includes 40 civil society organisations active in the areas of international cooperation, gender, health, peace, environment and labour.
